"The entire concept of 'curiosity' was new to me with respect to nutrition counseling. It seemed like a very unlikely word to include. I came to understand, however, how it can increase our awareness of our/client's behaviors when taking a more curious stance (I wonder how much food It will take to fill me up/satisfy me?) rather than a more judgmental, negative stance such as "I'm not supposed to eat more than this for lunch, but I seem extra hungry today!". Dr.
Ron Thebarge is a clinical psychologist in the Division of Behavioral
and Preventive Medicine at The Miriam Hospital. He is primarily
involved with providing clinical outpatient services through
the hospital's Behavioral Medicine Clinic. Dr. Thebarge's areas
of clinical specialization include facilitating patient coping
with chronic medical conditions, such as chronic pain, as well
as teaching patients strategies for long term success with managing
weight as part of the Miriam Hospital's multidisciplinary Weight
Management Program. He practices cognitive-behavioral therapy
that substantially incorporates practice of mindfulness-based
stress reduction and encouraging patients to apply the wisdom
teachings of their own traditions.
He is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Human
Behavior in Brown University’s Medical School. As a
faculty member of the Brown University Clinical Psychology
Internship Consortium, Dr. Thebarge teaches pre-doctoral
psychology interns during their clinical rotations at The
Miriam Hospital's Behavioral Medicine Clinic. He is a part
of the internship's Diversity initiative and educational
seminar series.
Dr. Thebarge came to The Miriam Hospital in 1990 after completing
a postdoctoral fellowship in the areas of pain management
and work rehabilitation at the University of Rochester Medical
Center in Rochester, NY. He earned a bachelor's degree at
the University of Connecticut, his master's and doctoral
degrees in Clinical Psychology at Miami University in Oxford,
OH, and completed his pre-doctoral psychology internship
at the University of Rochester Medical Center in Rochester,
NY. In addition to clinical service and teaching, his research
interests and publications have primarily focused on the
areas of chronic pain and adjustment to cancer.
Dr. Thebarge lives and works in Rhode Island. His wife Elissa
is a pediatric psychologist and an Associate Professor at
Brown Medical School. In addition to training interns and
postdoctoral fellows, she is primarily involved with researching
the benefits of adventure therapy for managing adolescent
obesity. Their children, a daughter, Meline, and
a son, Tarek, seem very normal, so far, despite being raised
by two psychologists.
