"The entire concept of 'curiosity' was new to me with respect to nutrition counseling. It seemed like a very unlikely word to include. I came to understand, however, how it can increase our awareness of our/client's behaviors when taking a more curious stance (I wonder how much food It will take to fill me up/satisfy me?) rather than a more judgmental, negative stance such as "I'm not supposed to eat more than this for lunch, but I seem extra hungry today!". Gretchen Newmark, MA, RD, LD is an expert in weight management and disordered eating and is a Registered Dietitian in private practice in Portland, Oregon. While Chief Nutritionist of the Multiple Risk Factor Intervention Trial at the University of Southern California School of Medicine, having recovered from anorexia nervosa and bulimia on her own, in 1979 she founded and led the first group for people with eating disorders in Los Angeles. Bringing experience from her meditation and yoga practices together with principles of Gestalt and cognitive behavioral therapies, she adopted mindful eating first for herself and eventually in her private practice. She guides her clients to greater mindfulness as a means of helping them improve their health habits and lifestyle.
She has participated in weight related research in the MRFIT trial and at the Kaiser Center for Health Research in Portland. Newmark is a writer in the field of nutrition and health with articles appearing in a variety of magazines, including the Yoga Journal, The Sun, Healthy Weight Journal, Buddhism Today and Let’s Live. She is a popular public speaker, lecturing widely for professionals and the public.
She taught hatha yoga in Santa Monica and Portland, and currently teaches meditation. She co-founded the Portland Diamondway Buddhist Center in 1997, and teaches Buddhism in centers internationally.
To provide for people who want to focus on spirituality during or after recovery, from 1995-1997, she trained in spiritual direction, a kind of listening that comes from the Catholic tradition but is ecumenical. It allows interested people to focus on their spiritual experience to discern their own truth, including what, if any, tradition, practices and teachings would most fit their view and needs.
She lives with her husband, an excellent cook, and enjoys eating his food, dancing, hiking, reading, and writing.
