"I have enjoyed each and every one of the Teleconferences so much that I am
now trying to schedule patients around them. I feel that the TCME is
extremely valuable and am planning to join as a member this week." -Danielle Paciera, LDN, RD, Tulane UniversityFrom tele-conference participant (The call) "it was great! I appreciated how you modeled these skills for us as you facilitated the group! I also loved hearing the experiences of others and learning about different resources. " Cathy C
"The entire concept of 'curiosity' was new to me with respect to nutrition counseling. It seemed like a very unlikely word to include. I came to understand, however, how it can increase our awareness of our/client's behaviors when taking a more curious stance (I wonder how much food It will take to fill me up/satisfy me?) rather than a more judgmental, negative stance such as "I'm not supposed to eat more than this for lunch, but I seem extra hungry today!". Donald Altman, M.A., LPC, is a practicing psychotherapist, former Buddhist monk, Emmy-Award-winning writer, and board member of The Center for Mindful Eating (TCME.ORG). He conducts mindful living and mindful eating workshops and retreats around the nation, and is known as America’s Mindfulness Coach for the way he makes mindful living and spiritual values accessible in daily life.
A prolific writer whose career spans more than twenty-five years, Donald has written several highly regarded books, including the pioneering mindful eating book, Art of the Inner Meal. An innovator, Donald’s Meal by Meal: 365 Meditations for Finding Balance through Mindful Eating was the first daily calendar book about mindful eating. He also created Mindful Eating Meal Cards and the first internet-based mindful eating program, 12-Weeks to Mindful Eating.
Donald’s Living Kindness (2002) has been used at the United Nations to help teach inner peace and calm to staff and delegates; the book has also been required reading in a New York Buddhist Chaplaincy program. Donald has also written for children’s television and documentaries, and has had numerous articles appear in print.
The Mindfulness Code: Strategies for Overcoming Stress, Anxiety, Fear and Unhappiness is Donald’s newest book, scheduled for release in June, 2010. This path-breaking book combines modern neuroscience and ancient practices to reveal “the 4-keys necessary to unlock the joyful you.”
Presently, he is an adjunct professor at Lewis and Clark College Graduate School, where he teaches The Contemplative Dimension in Education and Counseling. At Portland State University he teaches on a variety of topics, including Interpersonal Neurobiology and Advanced Mindfulness Interventions for Therapists. Donald trained with the Venerable U Silananda, author of The Four Foundations of Mindfulness, at a Buddhist monastery located near the San Bernardino Mountains in Southern California. He has taken monastic vows twice during intensive retreat periods—a practice common in many Southeast Asian countries—and hopes to do so again. He is also a member of the Dzogchen Foundation and the Burma Buddhist Monastery Association.
As a former Chicagoan, Donald loves deep dish pizza (which he eats mindfully—well, most of the time). An avid motorcyclist, Donald enjoys riding along the Oregon coast. He now lives in Portland, Oregon, with his wife and two cats.
Donald is available for speaking and workshops. He can be reached at his West Linn Counseling Office at 503-650-2208 or at info@mindfulpractices.com.
