Donald Altman, M.A., LPC, is a practicing psychotherapist, former Buddhist monk, Emmy-Award-winning writer, and board member of The Center for Mindful Eating (TCME.ORG). He conducts mindful living and mindfuleating workshops and retreats around the nation, and is known as America’s Mindfulness Coach for the way he makes mindful living and spiritual values accessible in daily life.
Presently, he is an adjunct professor at Lewis and Clark College Graduate School and Portland State University, where he teaches on a variety of mindfulness related topics. At the University of Western States he teaches A Course in Mindfulness that integrates mindfulness with brain science and evidence-based practices.
A prolific writer whose career spans more than twenty-five years, Donald has written several highly regarded books, including the pioneering mindful eating book, Art of the Inner Meal. His book Meal by Meal: 365 Meditations for Finding Balance through Mindful Eating was the first daily calendar book about mindful eating. He also created Mindful Eating Meal Cardsand the first internet-based mindful eating program, 12-Weeks to Mindful Eating.
Donald's newest book (2011), One-Minute Mindfulness: 50 Simple Ways to Find Peace, Clarity and New Possibilities in a Stressed Out World brings practical mindfulness solutions to daily living.
The Mindfulness Code--selected as "One of the Best Spiritual Books of 2010"--combines modern neuroscience and ancient practices.
Donald has also written for children’s television and documentaries, and has had numerous articles appear in print.
Donald trained with the Venerable U Silananda, author of The Four Foundations of Mindfulness, at a Buddhist monastery located near the San Bernardino Mountains in Southern California. He is also a member of the Burma Buddhist Monastery Association.
As a former Chicagoan, Donald loves deep dish pizza (which he eats mindfully—well, most of the time). An avid motorcyclist, Donald enjoys riding along the Oregon coast. He lives in Portland, Oregon.
