"The entire concept of 'curiosity' was new to me with respect to nutrition counseling. It seemed like a very unlikely word to include. I came to understand, however, how it can increase our awareness of our/client's behaviors when taking a more curious stance (I wonder how much food It will take to fill me up/satisfy me?) rather than a more judgmental, negative stance such as "I'm not supposed to eat more than this for lunch, but I seem extra hungry today!". The Board

Brian Shelley, MD

Dr. Shelley is board-certified in Family Medicine and a regular meditator. As a faculty member in the Section of Integrative Medicine at the University of New Mexico, Dr. Shelley founded the UNM program in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) in 2004. In 2006, he developed the Mindful Eating and Living (MEAL) program for people with obesity, which was the subject of a year-long randomized controlled trial (article in preparation).

Dr. Shelley became Wellness Director at First Choice Community Healthcare’s South Valley Family Health Commons in July, 2008. In this medically-underserved community, he has implemented a chronic pain clinic and a program in MBSR, along with other wellness initiatives. He also serves as Clinical Associate Professor, UNM Department of Family and Community Medicine, and Research Associate Professor, UNM Department of Psychology.
